This digital twin software takes the guesswork out of grid planning, helping operators optimise resources for the future

Due to the significant growth of data centres and rapid transport electrification, electricity demand has been increasing quickly in recent years, and is set to grow another 3.4% over the next year. For grid operators looking to manage and allocate resources effectively, this rising demand presents a challenge.

To enable operators to better plan, Swedish company Endre Tech has combined its team’s data science expertise with AI to create software that can accurately predict energy demand.

Using third-party societal data and smart algorithms, the technology provides detailed projections of when and where electricity will be required. With this information, grid operators, green energy suppliers, and governments can better manage infrastructure and identify where investment is needed to create more resilient grids for the future.

Endre offers a range of services that are underpinned by AI digital twins, which give users the ability to simulate various scenarios to find the most effective and cost-efficient solution before they make a decision in real life.

For instance, the grid capacity map provides a detailed picture of a user’s current and future grid, enabling them to visualise potential bottlenecks in advance so changes can be made proactively. Endre also lets users evaluate the impact of specific prospective battery energy storage systems and grid-demanding connection requests, giving customers an accurate picture of future grid capacity and flexibility needs.

As well as forecasting, with Endre’s software, users can automatically generate and update network development plans, instead of needing to conduct time-consuming manual data entries and analysis.

Granular insights into grid emissions


Cutting-edge algorithms let users trace electricity emissions from source to consumption

Today, the power grid is something of a black box, with businesses traditionally unable to fully understand how the power they purchase from energy companies translates into greenhouse gas emissions in real time. This is due to a lack of location- and time-specific data.

Startup Singularity Energy, which was developed by experts at Harvard, MIT, and Johns Hopkins, has created a software platform and suite of products, including its free open grid emissions dataset (OGE), which provides insight into the emissions caused by the grid in a particular location at a particular time.

The organisation’s CarbonFlow technology enables granular tracing of emissions from source through to consumption, allowing users to understand how electricity-related emissions flow across the grid. Typically, this kind of data is accessed at the national or regional level, but this doesn’t take into account the fact that emission consumption within these areas can vary widely.

This means that energy providers can offer stakeholders important, individualised emissions data for use in carbon reporting, data-driven policymaking, and tracking clean energy deliverability.

Singularity also offers an Energy Attribute Program Management (EAPM) solution, which enables users to combine all owned generation, energy purchases, energy attribute certificates (also known as Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) in the UK), and customer load data in one easy-to-understand platform. With the software, users can configure and monitor the emissions impact of clean energy programmes, including allocating customers generation depending on their tariff guarantees and testing the impact of potential future scenarios.

Together, Singularity’s solutions can help utility companies, grid operators, businesses, and technology providers more accurately measure their grid-related emissions and receive actionable decarbonisation insights. Focused on the US, Singularity last year began collaborating with the country’s second-largest utility firm Southern Company to develop an hourly grid emissions platform for participating Southern customers. Singularity has also partnered with residential energy provider Eversource, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, and real estate ESG platform Measurabl.
